Hemp products for cooking, baking and snacking
The Nordic Hemp Farm (The Murtola Hemp Farm by its Finnish name) is a family business which began its operations in 2014 in Marttila, a small town located in the Southwest region of Finland. In addition to hemp, the family Murtola is cultivating peas, oats, malting barley and clovers. Today the popular products of The Nordic Hemp Farm are sold in Finland and abroad.
The selection of The Nordic Hemp Farm includes ground hemp mixes which contain berry powders from either red or blue berries. The ground hemp mixes add a lot of vitamins, good fatty acids and fibers to porridges, yogurts or smoothies. As their name hints, Hamppu Snacks are a perfect snack or a good pair to cheeses or spreads. The roasted and salted hemp seeds are a nutritious addition to salads, soups, yogurts or baking.
Hemp – one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world
Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. Hemp was the number one material used to make clothing until the 19th century. Hemp was also used as the material for ropes, medicine, lamp oils and paper. Hemp has also been used for nutritional purposes, for example for cooking porridge or for making hemp oil.
Today the EU regulates and oversees the cultivation of hemp and the production of hemp products. The hemp used in food, cosmetics and clothing industries is not intoxicating because their THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive constituent of cannabis) concentration is very low. For example, the THC concentration of the hemp cultivated by The Nordic Hemp Farm is 0,2 percent whereas the THC concentration in the intoxicating species is about 10-20 percent.
The excellent nutritional values of hemp
Hemp products have gained more popularity over the last years partially due to the fact that hemp has excellent nutritional values. The hemp seeds contain plenty of unsaturated fats, such as omega 3, 6 and 9 and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Hemp seeds also contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Hemp is an excellent component of a ketogenic diet because it contains very little carbohydrates but plenty of protein. For example, 100 grams of hemp seeds contain 25 grams of protein and only 3 grams of carbohydrates. Hemp also contains all the 8 necessary amino acids which our bodies need and 12 other amino acids in addition. The proteins of hemp are also in an easily digestible form.
