Strawberry is a delicious and healthy treat

Strawberry is the favorite berry for many people. The sweet strawberry contains plenty of vitamin C but very little energy so it is the perfect treat for the health-conscious. The season to enjoy fresh strawberries is short at least here in the North, but luckily strawberries can be preserved and enjoyed in many other forms as well! Strawberry is rich in vitamin C

Contrary to the common belief, strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is not a berry but an accessory fruit, or a false fruit.

Strawberry contains plenty of vitamins and minerals but only little energy: 100 g of strawberries contains only 45 calories. Therefore strawberries are an excellent addition to the daily diet. Strawberry is particularly rich in vitamin C: it contains 60 mg/100 g of vitamin C, which is more than in an orange (36,7 mg/100 g). Strawberry also contains as much dietary fiber as carrot which makes it good food for the gut. The red color of strawberry is due to anthocyanins which are powerful antioxidants that can prevent the growth of cancer cells.

The use of strawberries

Strawberries are best to be eaten fresh, such as in salads, paired with feta cheese, balsamic vinegar and pepper for example. A classic summer dessert in the North is fresh strawberries with whipped cream, vanilla sauce or ice cream.

In the North, the growth season of strawberries is very short, only a few weeks in June-July. Luckily strawberries are also easy to preserve so they can be enjoyed all year round. Strawberries can be frozen and used for example in smoothies. Strawberries can also be dried or ground into powder that can be added to yogurt, porridge or smoothie.
