What ubiquinone Q10 is?
With aging, the body’s production of ubiquinone decreases. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) plays a critical role in how the heart and other organs function. It is also one of the most powerful antioxidants known.
Ubiquinone levels in the body vary with age
Ubiquinone concentration is highest at the age of 20, when growth is fast and energy consumption is high. After that, the ubiquinone levels of the body start to decrease. At the age of 40, the ubiquinone levels have decreased by half, and at the age of 75 they are only one third compared to the levels of a 20-year-old.
Ubiquinone and cholesterol medicines
Widely used cholesterol medicines, statins, inhibit the formation of cholesterol in the liver. At the same time, they also inhibit the ubiquinone production. In the bloodstream, ubiquinone is transported in LDL cholesterol and it acts as an antioxidant preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Daily ubiquinone supplementation increases the ubiquinone levels in blood and in LDL cholesterol (Palomäki A. Multifactorial prevention, lovastatin therapy and ubiquinone supplementation in coronary heart disease. Dissertation 2002.)
