The sun has many functions
Sun is a source of energy for the earth, plants and us humans. The photosynthesis of the plants requires solar energy and plants produce energy for all organisms. Thus our physical energy also originates from the sun, since all energy contains stored solar energy!
Sunlight
Sunlight is a significant source of vitamin D. The UVB radiation of the sun produces vitamin D on the skin for the body to use. It is not possible to get too much vitamin D from sunlight because the excess vitamin D is dissolved. In Northern countries, it is only possible to get vitamin D from the sun during the summer months. At other times it is advisable to take vitamin D supplements daily.
Melatonin is a hormone which affects the sleep–wake cycle. Sunlight reduces the amount of melatonin formed in the body. Lack of sunlight can therefore increase the production of melatonin in the body and cause sleepiness and fatigue.
Sunlight also affects the development of eyes.
When exposed to too much sunlight the skin can burn which in time makes the skin thicker and causes wrinkles.
