Wild herbs have many uses

Wild herbs are versatile plants that have been used as spices, substitutes for tea and coffee as well as medicine in the Nordic traditions. Wild herbs have had a special role in traditional medicine and they have been used for many kinds of ailments. One of the most popular ways to do this has been to brew herbal tea.

Wild herbs are often collected in the early days of summer when the leaves are at their best. In Finland anyone can collect wild herbs from nature due to everyman’s rights. Everyman’s rights mean that anyone has the right to enjoy nature’s offerings for free, such as berries, mushrooms and wild herbs, regardless of who owns the land.

Some of the most popular Nordic wild herbs which are also used as teas are the following:

  • Birch: Birch leaves are known for their cleansing properties. They help to reduce swelling and improve digestion.
  • Nettle: Nettle has a long history for being used in traditional medicine. Nettle contains iron, calcium and vitamin C. Nettle can be used in the same way as spinach.
  • Willow herb flowers: Willow herb flowers have traditionally been used to treat stomach flu and ulcer as well as inflammation in the mouth and throat. Willow herb flowers contain dietary fiber, phosphorus, riboflavin, protein, vitamins C and A and carotene.
  • Dandelion: Dandelions are used in cooking as well as traditional medicine. Dandelions contain high levels of vitamins A and C, calcium and iron.
  • Yarrow: Studies have shown that yarrow has antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory activity. Yarrow contains high levels of manganese, magnesium, iron and vitamins A and C.
  • Roseroot: Roseroot is called ginseng of the North as it is a powerful herb that helps to increase durability and strength. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat anxiety and depression.
