Bilberry vs Blueberry: What's the Difference – and Why It Matters for Eye Health

Pick a handful of berries in a Finnish forest in late July and your fingers will tell you what you are holding. Bilberries stain everything they touch a deep violet; cultivated highbush blueberries usually do not. The colour difference reflects a real botanical and compositional distinction between two berries that English speakers often treat as interchangeable.

Bilberry is the berry behind much of the traditional eye-health lore and many bilberry-extract supplements. It typically contains a higher concentration of anthocyanins than cultivated highbush blueberry, although measured levels vary with variety, growing conditions, ripeness, storage and analytical method. This guide explains the differences and gives a cautious account of what the eye-health evidence does and does not support.

The short answer

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is the small Northern European forest berry, purple throughout and strongly flavoured. Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is the larger cultivated North American species, usually with pale flesh and a milder taste. Both are nutritious berries. Bilberry generally contains more anthocyanin pigment, while total polyphenol and antioxidant measurements depend on the sample and method used.

Botany and origin

Bilberries grow on low shrubs across boreal and temperate forests in Europe. Most commercial bilberries are still collected from wild stands, although cultivation and breeding work exists and it is too absolute to describe the species as impossible to farm. In Finland, bilberry is mustikka. Finland's everyman's rights allow people to pick wild berries in many natural areas, provided they keep away from private yards, respect protected-area rules and do not cause disturbance or damage.

The cut test: flesh colour

Cut a highbush blueberry and the flesh is usually pale green-white. Cut a ripe bilberry and the flesh is red-purple throughout. The pigment in both skin and flesh is the visible reason bilberry stains so readily.

Taste and kitchen behaviour

Bilberries are smaller, softer and more aromatic, with an intense tart-sweet flavour. They collapse readily in cooking, releasing colour and flavour into Finnish bilberry pie (mustikkapiirakka), soups and sauces. Highbush blueberries are generally firmer and milder and hold their shape better.

Nutrition and anthocyanins

Both berries provide fibre and a range of vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. Bilberries commonly contain higher anthocyanin concentrations than cultivated highbush blueberries because the pigment extends through the flesh. The exact difference is not fixed: published values vary substantially between samples, seasons, origins and laboratory methods.

Why anthocyanins matter

Anthocyanins are blue, red and violet plant pigments belonging to the polyphenol family. They are widely studied in laboratory, dietary and clinical research. Laboratory antioxidant activity is not the same as a demonstrated health outcome in people, so anthocyanin-rich foods are best presented as part of a varied diet rather than as treatments.

Bilberry and eye health: what the evidence says

Bilberry's eye reputation is often linked to a story that Royal Air Force pilots ate bilberry jam to improve night vision during the Second World War. The story is memorable, but reliable historical support is weak.

A systematic review of placebo-controlled trials found that the better-designed studies did not support improved normal night vision in healthy people. Other ocular uses continue to be studied, but evidence is not strong enough to promise that bilberry alone improves vision or treats an eye condition.

Bilberry is often included in eye-health formulas alongside lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc. These ingredients should not be treated as interchangeable. Zinc has an EU-authorised claim because it contributes to the maintenance of normal vision when the product meets the conditions of use. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids naturally present in the macula, but their presence does not automatically authorise a broad vision claim. Compare the complete formula, declared amounts and authorised wording rather than assuming that bilberry itself carries the claim.

How to use bilberry

Fresh and frozen berries

In Finland, fresh bilberries are used in porridge, pancakes, pies and desserts. They also freeze well, although texture softens after thawing.

Powder, dried berries and juice

Freeze-dried powder can be a practical year-round format. Product composition depends on whether it contains whole berries, juice solids or another raw material, so check the ingredient list and nutrition information. Powder adds colour and berry flavour to smoothies, yoghurt and porridge.

Bilberry extracts

Extract supplements often declare a standardised anthocyanin content. That makes products easier to compare, but standardisation does not by itself prove a clinical benefit. Check the daily amount, extract specification and any companion nutrients.

Wild origin without overstatement

Much of the bilberry sold from Finland and the Nordic region is wild-collected from natural forests. That is a meaningful sourcing characteristic when it is documented.
