Recommended intake of protective nutrients
According to the Nutrition and food recommendations by Finnish food authority, the daily intake of vitamin D should be 10 µg. This is too low in certain conditions such as in the North where the amount of sunshine is limited a significant part of the year. Sufficient intake of vitamin D is required to keep the blood vitamin D levels stable.
The recommended daily intake for vitamin B12 is about 2 µg for an adult and 0,5–1,3 µg for a child. For breastfeeding women, the recommended daily intake is 2,6 µg.
Women’s need for folate or vitamin B9 increases during pregnancy and 2 months before pregnancy. The recommended daily intake is then 500 μg.
Adults should get 150 µg of iodine per day. Pregnant women need about 175 µg and women who are breastfeeding 200 µg of iodine per day.
Calcium supplements are recommended for people who don’t consume any dairy products.
The recommended intake of iron for men, young girls and women post menopause is 9 mg / day. The need of iron for women is greater from puberty to menopause due to periods: the recommended daily intake is then 15 mg.
