Fatty acids provide nutrition for the mind

The brain needs fatty acids. About 60 % of the dry weight of the brain is fat out of which a significant part is DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. In order to function normally, the brain needs to be fed with the right fats.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have numerous beneficial effects on our bodies. Both fatty acids are considered as necessary fatty acids for the body and their sufficient intake should be secured either with nutrition or with supplements. The beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the heart is supported by strong research evidence. Based on the latest research, omega-3 fatty acids also function in the brain on various levels and with different regulatory functions.

Omega-3 fatty acids for the memory and the mind

Every second millions of messages are transferred between the brain cells and the rest of the body. The neurotransmitters produced by the neurons in the brain act as messengers and enable communication between the neurons. The message travels with the help of chemical neurotransmitters from neuron to neuron.

Nutrients have a big effect on the formation and functioning of neurotransmitters. The better and faster messages are transferred, the faster we also understand and connect things and the faster we act. The right kind of nutrition supports the functioning of the brain cells and repairs the existing damage to some extent.

Omega-3 fatty acids affect neurotransmitters which act as messengers in the brain activity. EPA and DHA are particularly important omega-3 fatty acids which in the light of the latest research are needed for the functioning of neurons in the central nervous system. EPA affects for example the transferring of messages between the neurons. DHA functions as the building material for neurons and supports sight, memory and the brain areas affecting learning. The favorable effect of DHA can be attained by consuming at least 250 mg of DHA per day.

DHA affects already in the fetal period on the baby’s sight and the development of the heart and the brains and it is also important for the expecting mother. The gamma-Linolenic acid or GLA which belongs to the omega-6 fatty acids has a favorable joint effect with EPA and DHA.

The effect of omega-3 fatty acids on concentration, hyperactivity and memory lapses have been researched a lot. Based on current knowledge, the insufficient intake of fatty acids seems to be connected to those difficulties.

Secure the regular intake of EPA and DHA

Our bodies need fatty acids continuously. The body consumes useful fatty acids daily and it is able to store them poorly. Stress, busy lifestyle and weakened immune system increase the need for beneficial fatty acids. Their sufficient intake should be secured each day of the year. The positive effects of restoring the low level of fatty acids can be seen only after 2-3 months as it takes that long for the necessary fatty acids to transfer on to cell membranes.

An essential part of a brain-friendly diet is fish which is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. If fish is not your cup of tea or if it is challenging to take it as a part of the everyday diet, it is best to choose supplements. The daily intake of fatty acids can easily be obtained from a high-quality and pure fatty acid supplement.
