What is a probiotic supplement?

In scientific use, a probiotic is a live microorganism that, when supplied in an adequate amount, has been shown to confer a health benefit. Products sold in this category are commonly described as probiotic, live-culture or friendly-bacteria supplements, but not every product uses the same microorganisms, dose or formulation.

The label may identify the microorganism by genus and species, and sometimes by a more specific strain code. That detail matters because evidence connected with one strain or finished product should not automatically be applied to another. A broad statement about “probiotics” cannot describe every formula equally well.

CFU is useful, but it is not a quality ranking

CFU stands for colony-forming units, a measure used to describe viable microorganisms. It helps compare the labelled quantity, but a larger CFU number is not automatically better. The identity of the microorganisms, the serving size, the product format and the evidence behind the finished formula are also relevant.

Check whether the stated CFU amount applies per capsule, per serving or per recommended daily dose. Where the information is available, note whether the count is guaranteed through the end of shelf life rather than stated only at manufacture. Avoid comparing two products by headline numbers when their serving instructions are different.

Compare formats, added ingredients and storage

Capsules are compact and usually easy to measure. Chewable products and liquids can be practical for people who prefer not to swallow capsules, including children when the specific product is intended for their age group. Flavourings, sweeteners and allergens may differ between formats.

Some formulas also contain vitamins, minerals, cranberry, fibre, glutamine or greens. These additions can change the product’s purpose and suitability. Any authorised claim attached to an added vitamin or mineral belongs to that nutrient under the relevant conditions; it does not prove a general benefit for every microorganism in the formula.

Storage requirements are product-specific. Some live-culture supplements are designed for room-temperature storage, while others may need cooler conditions. Follow the pack rather than assuming that all products must - or must not - be refrigerated.

Choosing for adults or children

Age suitability, serving size and format should be checked before buying for a child. A children’s chewable or liquid is not simply a smaller adult product, and adult CFU numbers are not a useful target for a child. Follow the labelled age range and directions, and ask a healthcare professional when suitability is uncertain.

Adults should also consider medication, pregnancy, underlying illness and immune status. Food supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent a condition. Compare the complete formula and instructions rather than choosing solely on CFU or the number of listed organisms.
